Giving has always been a big trend in our society, and now more than ever it has become extremely important. Our economy has made many think twice about buying an item, or even donating money to a good cause, but what if you could buy something, and give something at the same time? That’s what Blake Mycoskie decided to do when he founded his company, TOMS Shoes. TOMS mission statement “promises that for every pair of TOMS shoes you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of shoes to a child in need. One for One.” TOMS has given over 10,000 pairs of shoes to children in Argentina and 50,000 pairs to children in South Africa. Since the company’s start in 2006, TOMS has donated over 130,000 pairs of shoes (and counting) to children in need all over the world.
These numbers really make a difference! The shoes are uniquely designed, and don’t look like anything you would buy in any ordinary shoe store, which makes them distinctive. They come in a variety of colors and patterns, and cost on average about $44. You can purchase the shoes on the TOMS website, www.tomsshoes.com, or go to various shoe stores which carry the brand (listen on their website). TOMS has even partnered up with designers such as Ralph Lauren’s Rugby line to design shoes for them, where you can still buy a pair and have a pair donated by TOMS.
TOMS has also partnered up with the boy band Hanson, who you may remember from the 90’s with their hit song “MMMBop!”
“We want to inspire others to look for simple tangible ways to make a difference. It is easy to be halted by the great hurdles of poverty and AIDS, but making an impact can begin as simply as giving someone a pair of shoes, or buying a song.” - Taylor Hanson
The group joined Blake Mycoskie and his TOMS team on their second shoe drop to
South Africa to donate shoes to children in need.
Just because your budget may be tight, try giving something or donating to a cause. It will make you feel better, and will make someone else feel better, too. TOMS started as an idea that grew from a small business and into a large company that has impacted thousands of lives. If you want to get inspired, watch the TOMS video on their website, www.tomsshoes.com, and check out the shoes while you’re there. There’s a famous saying “’Tis better to give than to receive”, why not do both?
